Siberian Native Peoples
Pictures

We are constantly adding to our unique documentation of the peoples of Siberia. Photographs of Chukchi, Dolgan, E'ven, Evenki, Khanty, Koryak,Tuvan and Yakut, including pictures of reindeer being ridden and traditional life of these native peoples in Siberia's taiga and tundra. Also extensive coverage of the Tundra and Forest Nenet Reindeer herders of the Yamal and Gydan Peninsulas.

INDUSTRIES

We have been granted access to many industrial and petrochemical sites in Siberia and have coverage of the heavy industry and mining in Norilsk, the Gas developments in north west Siberia and other pictures of docks, power stations, mines and factories in an arctic environment, on the positive side we have covered the hospital in Norilsk and the Tomatoes growing in green houses heated by the nuclear power station in Bilibino.

Update: In spring 2008 Bryan travelled on the railway being constructed to the gas fields at Bovanenkovo, he took pictures of the train and the construction on one of the railway bridges being built along the line. We have new pictures of modern buildings in the regional capital, Salekhard, now a gas boomtown. Later in the trip he visited Noviy Urengoi and photographed the sections of the Gas pipeline being transported on trucks along the Winter roads towards the Yorharovo gas field and then being lifted into their place and welded on the pipeline, all in the dead of winter. They will carry the gas to the Yorharovo Neftgaz Production facility. We also have more pictures of gas flares at the Gazprom facilty in Noviy Urengoi.

Chukotka
Anadyr The main town and administrative centre of the region.
Bilibino Local industry including Gold mining, and the Arctic's only nuclear power station. Also growing vegetables in greenhouses when the outside temperature is -50C.

Coastal Communities Yanrakynnot, Provideniya, Uelen, Inchoun.

Archaeological Sites Whalebone Alley on Yttygran Island. Masik, Poeten Bay, Stone Heart., Naucan, Cape Dzechnev (Cape East) on the Bering Strait.

Evenkiya Photos of Tura, the administrative centre, as well as life in the small native village of Surinda.

Yamal Salekhard - the administrative centre of the region. Nadym - centre of the region's gas industry. Also, everyday life in the small native villages of Yar-Sale and Panaevsk.

Update: Spring 2008 Bryan attended a festival at Pitlyar for reindeer racing and pictures of the spectators, as well as taking photographs of the Ice sculptures in Salekhard.

Bovanenkova The World's largest Gas Field. Winter and summer photographs of drilling derricks, gas workers, as well as pollution and damage to tundra. Also images that illustrate the conflict between reindeer herding and petro-chemical development in the area.

Kamchatka. Petropavlovsk Volcanoes and geothermal activity, cityscapes.

Koryakia Chukchi, Even and Koryak people.

Yakutia Yakutsk horse and reindeer herding, Verkhoyansk, Life in the coldest town in the northern hemisphere, milk in blocks and boiling water exploding into ice crystals.

Khanty-Mansiysk Epic reindeer drive, taking 1,000 reindeer south to repopulate the Khanty-Mansiysk area where reindeer herding was stopped by the oil industry.

Gydan Harsh life of the Tundra Nenets, men in white fur clothing, fishing and making offerings at sacred sites (Pre-Christian) Chechen couple who have fled the war at home and are now running a trading post in this inhospitable spot.

Update: Spring 2008 Bryan returned to the Gydan, and spent some time in the village of Nahodka.

Kola Peninsula Life in and around the Sami village of Lovozero in winter and summer. The Nickel works and dead areas around Monchegorsk, The fishing camp for wealthy anglers on the Kharlovka River and their impact on local Sami. Murmansk in summer and winter. Swimming in a hole in the ice on Lake Semyonovskaya and the dramatic monument Alyosha.

Franz Josef Land Cape Norvegia on Jackson Island, Wellman's hut and Cape Tegettoff on Hall Island, Calm Bay, Tichaya Bay on Hooker Island and Rubini Rock.Cape Flora on Northbrook Island, the extraordinary rock spheres on Champ Island. The grave of Anton Krisch.
